Genk manager hails Durosinmi following maiden strike

KRC Genk coach Jess Thorup has expressed admiration for Nigerian striker Rafiu Durosinmi, who scored on his competitive debut in the team's 2-1 loss to Zulte Waregem on Sunday.

Thorup noted that Durosinmi's goal was a result of his notable qualities, which were evident when he headed in Junya Ito's left-footed cross, a move that showcased the striker's skills, as reported by Voetbalnieuws.

Durosinmi gave Genk the lead in the 39th minute of their opening 2026/27 Belgian Pro League game, but the team was unable to maintain their advantage.

Marley Aké equalized for Zulte Waregem in the 82nd minute, and Serxho Ujka sealed their comeback with a goal four minutes later, resulting in a 2-1 defeat for Genk.

Despite the loss, Thorup highlighted Durosinmi's performance as a positive aspect of the game, demonstrating why Genk made him their record signing.

The 23-year-old striker joined Genk on a four-year contract until June 2030, with the club paying €10.5m for his services after he left Pisa.

Prior to joining Pisa, Durosinmi had an impressive stint at Viktoria Plzeň, where he scored 35 goals and provided 10 assists in 86 appearances.

Genk had been seeking a long-term replacement for former Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare, and now hopes that Durosinmi will build on his promising debut and justify their record investment with more goals.
