Former world number one Jamie Murray hangs up his racket at the age of 40

Jamie Murray, a former world number one doubles player and seven-time Grand Slam champion, has announced his retirement from professional tennis at the age of 40, as reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday.

Through an Instagram post, Murray confirmed the news, bringing to a close a career that spanned over two decades at the top level of the sport, during which he expressed feeling "very fortunate and privileged" for the experiences tennis has given him.

Murray reflected on his remarkable journey, stating "My tennis journey comes to an end after 36 years," and expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had, noting he has "no regrets" after competing at the top level for 20 years.

As a doubles specialist, Murray achieved the highest ranking in men's doubles, becoming the first British player to do so, and won 34 ATP doubles titles and seven Grand Slam crowns throughout his career.

Notably, two of his Grand Slam titles were won alongside his brother, Andy Murray, with whom he also played a key role in Great Britain's historic 2015 Davis Cup victory, the nation's first in 79 years.

Murray also found significant success in mixed doubles, securing five Grand Slam titles, including two at Wimbledon, with partners Jelena Jankovic in 2007 and Martina Hingis in 2017.

A highlight of his career was his 2016 season with partner Bruno Soares, during which they won the Australian Open and US Open men's doubles titles and finished as the world's top-ranked team.
