Former Ogun state first lady Olufunke Daniel mourns loss of her mother

Chief Sabainah Ibironke Opawole, the mother of former Ogun State First Lady Yeye Olufunke Daniel, has passed away at the age of 93, following a brief illness on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

Yeye Olufunke Daniel is the wife of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the former Governor of Ogun State and current Senator representing Ogun East.

A statement issued by Steve Oliyide, media aide to former Governor Gbenga Daniel, on Sunday, confirmed the death of Mrs Opawole, describing her as the beloved matriarch of the Opawole and Daniel families.

According to the statement, Chief Mrs Sabainah Ibironke Opawole was born on April 23, 1933, to Princess Mariam Ladigbolu of the revered Ladigbolu family of the Oyo Kingdom and the late Rev. O. Osoba of Olodo Village, Abeokuta.

She lived a long and fulfilling life, guided by her faith as a devoted Christian of the Baptist denomination, until her peaceful passing on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

Chief Sabainah Ibironke Opawole is survived by several children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, including Her Excellency Yeye Olufunke Daniel, the former First Lady of Ogun State and wife of Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

Her passing has elicited an outpouring of condolences from family, friends, and associates across Ogun State and beyond, who remember her as a woman of remarkable grace, strength, and unwavering faith.
