Fire guts cosmetics factory in Anambra

A devastating fire broke out at a cosmetics manufacturing company located in Nkwelle, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, destroying part of the facility as well as goods and property worth several millions of naira.

Although no casualties were recorded, it was gathered that the fire, which occurred late on Saturday, originated from a faulty factory machine and spread before the arrival of firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service.

Some eyewitnesses near the facility said the fire raged for several minutes before firefighters arrived, battled the blaze and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings.

“The fire started from a corner of the complex before thick smoke engulfed a large section of the area. It burnt for several minutes before the arrival of firefighters,” an eyewitness said.

Among the goods and property damaged by the fire were raw materials, production machines, testing equipment and other items within the premises.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, said a fire crew and firefighting equipment were swiftly deployed following a distress call.

Chiketa stated that upon arrival, the firefighters battled the blaze with courage and professionalism until it was brought under control.

He said, “The Anambra State Fire Service responded promptly to a fire outbreak at Emos Best Industries Ltd., Nkwelle, on Saturday, July 4. The distress call was received at 4:12 p.m., and firefighters were immediately mobilised to the scene, arriving at 4:40 p.m.

“Through the swift intervention and professionalism of the fire crew, the incident was brought under control, preventing the fire from spreading further and minimising damage. -The operation was successfully concluded, and the firefighters departed the scene at 6:50 p.m.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the fire originated from a faulty factory machine. No casualties were recorded.”

The fire service spokesman urged industries and business owners to carry out regular inspections and maintenance of factory equipment and electrical installations to prevent similar incidents, adding that fire safety measures should be strictly observed at all times.
