Finidi sets sights on domestic championship after securing African Champions League spot

Finidi George has now turned his attention to capturing the Nigeria Premier Football League title, having successfully led Rivers United to a spot in next season's CAF Champions League.

Rivers United secured their place in the continental competition on Sunday, courtesy of a thrilling 3-2 win over Wikki Tourists in a league match played in Bauchi.

With this result, Rivers United remains just one point behind leaders Rangers International, keeping them firmly in contention for the title as the season enters its final game.

Rangers International maintained their grip on top spot by edging out Bendel Insurance F.C. 2-1 in a match held in Enugu.

The title race will be decided on the final day of the season, with Rangers International set to face Ikorodu City F.C. and Rivers United hosting Katsina United.

Despite the achievement of qualifying for the CAF Champions League for the second consecutive year, Finidi George emphasized that his team is focused on winning the league title.

Finidi stated, "Qualifying for the CAF Champions League two years in a row is a huge achievement, and the players deserve credit, but now we want to see if we can finish the job and win the title."

The former Ajax winger praised his players for their determination, noting that coming from behind twice to defeat Wikki Tourists away from home was a testament to the team's mentality.

According to Finidi, "It was a very difficult game, and playing away in Bauchi with the home crowd behind Wikki was never going to be easy, but the players gave everything in the final minutes to score the winning goal."

Rivers United participated in the CAF Champions League this season as Nigeria's sole representative but were eliminated in the group stage.

Finidi, who previously led Enyimba to their ninth league title in 2023, is now seeking his first silverware with Rivers United since joining the 2022 champions in the summer of 2024.
