FIFA vice-president Victor Montagliani downplayed the political and security concerns surrounding the upcoming World Cup, stating that such issues will fade into the background once the tournament kicks off, as has been the case in previous editions.

The 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, has been marred by complications including the war in the Middle East, President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, and gang violence in Mexico, among other factors.

Iran has announced its refusal to play scheduled matches in the US, citing warnings from Trump that Iranian players would be at risk, while fans from various countries have expressed difficulties in obtaining visas and fears of being targeted by immigration agents.

Montagliani, who heads the CONCACAF confederation, drew parallels between the current concerns and those that preceded previous World Cups, emphasizing that geopolitical issues have always been present.

He referenced the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, which took place during the country’s brutal military dictatorship, as an example of a tournament that was successful despite significant geopolitical tensions.

According to rights groups, approximately 30,000 people died or disappeared under the Argentine dictatorship, one of the bloodiest in Latin America’s history.
