Fatal confrontation between farmers and herders in Kebbi results in eight deaths

No fewer than eight people have been killed in a violent clash between farmers and herders in Gulma town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The incident was reportedly triggered by the alleged killing of a farmer, who was said to have been stabbed to death by a Fulani herder while working on his farmland.

The killing sparked a reprisal attack by some members of the farming community, who allegedly stormed nearby Fulani settlements, resulting in multiple casualties and heightened tension in the area.

Confirming the incident to newsmen on Monday, the spokesman for the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Bashir Usman, said security operatives had brought the situation under control.

According to him, the violence occurred at about 3pm and claimed eight lives.

“The incident was a reprisal attack following the stabbing of a farmer by a herder. We are currently in control of the situation, and eight people lost their lives,” the police spokesman stated.

He disclosed that four injured persons were rescued by security personnel and taken to a medical facility for treatment before being discharged.

The police spokesman added that normalcy had been restored in the community, with security personnel deployed to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Usman appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

He urged members of the public to channel grievances through appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence or self-help.
