Fatal accident in Lagos claims one life, leaves four others hurt

A devastating head-on collision between two Toyota Sienna buses on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Tuesday has resulted in the death of one adult female and left four other passengers with serious injuries.

The accident occurred near Iyana-Iworo during the early morning hours, with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency subsequently confirming the incident.

According to Mr Olawale Afolabi, the Head of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the two vehicles involved in the crash were fully loaded commercial buses.

The injured victims were promptly evacuated to a nearby trauma centre for urgent medical attention, as revealed by Afolabi.

Preliminary investigations have shown that reckless driving by another Toyota Sienna triggered the crash, resulting in a head-on collision between the two vehicles, Afolabi explained.

The LASEMA’s Tiger Squad from the C3 Command was activated at approximately 7:26 a.m. and arrived at the scene around 8:00 a.m. to coordinate rescue and recovery operations.

LASEMA personnel collaborated with officers of the police and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority to secure the scene, manage traffic, and clear the wreckage.

Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, described the crash as preventable and urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations.

He warned against excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, and poor lane discipline, emphasizing the need for caution on major highways and cooperation with traffic managers.
