Falcons Prepared to Seize Another Opportunity, According to Madugu

Nigeria's Super Falcons are resolute in their pursuit of a 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup spot, with coach Justine Madugu affirming their determination to capitalize on a second chance, as they initiate their play-off campaign against South Africa on Thursday.

The team's automatic qualification bid was thwarted by a 1-0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, but this setback has galvanized their resolve to secure a World Cup berth in Brazil, according to Madugu.

With their WAFCON title defense now out of reach, the Falcons must navigate the play-offs to reach the Brazilian tournament, and their first hurdle is South Africa, who stand between them and another step towards qualification.

Having never missed a FIFA Women’s World Cup since its inception, Madugu acknowledged the disappointment of missing out on automatic qualification, but expressed confidence that the players are prepared to respond when they face South Africa's Banyana Banyana.

Madugu emphasized the team's commitment, stating, “We have a second chance and we will give it our all,” and underscored their determination to avoid disappointing the nation and following in the footsteps of the men's team.

The coach's reference to the men's team alluded to the Super Eagles' failure to capitalize on their own second chance at World Cup qualification, after they missed direct qualification from their group and subsequently lost to DR Congo in the CAF play-off tournament in Morocco.

Madugu took responsibility for the team's failure to secure automatic qualification, saying, “I quite understand the pains everyone is going through, we know what it means for all of us and the country, I apologise and take responsibility for that.”
