European Football Association Imposes Penalty on Real Madrid Following Supporter's Nazi Gesture

Real Madrid has been handed a fine of 15,000 euros, equivalent to $17,000, by UEFA following an incident in which a fan made a Nazi salute prior to a Champions League match last week.

The disciplinary board of the European football governing body also imposed a partial stadium closure, which will affect 500 seats, although this penalty has been suspended for a one-year probationary period.

The punishment was meted out due to the racist and discriminatory behavior exhibited by Real Madrid supporters during the second leg of their play-off round victory over Benfica, which took place on February 25.

According to UEFA, the sanction was a direct response to the actions of the club's fans, as stated in an official statement released by European football's governing body.

Before the match began, a supporter was caught on camera performing a Nazi salute in the stands, prompting Real Madrid to eject the individual from the premises.

An incident of alleged racism had also occurred during the first leg of the tie, with Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni accused of targeting Real winger Vinicius Junior, although Prestianni has denied any wrongdoing.

Despite these incidents, Real Madrid progressed to the last 16 of the competition, where they will face off against Premier League side Manchester City.
