Establishment of fresh military unit to enhance reaction to safety risks – Benue governor

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has praised President Bola Tinubu for giving the green light to establish the Nigerian Army's 5 Division Headquarters in Makurdi, the state's capital city, a move that significantly bolsters the nation's security framework and efforts to combat insecurity in the North-Central region.

The governor's commendation was conveyed through a statement released on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, and highlighted the President's dedication to fortifying national security, as evidenced by the approval, which is part of the Nigerian Army's expansion from eight to 12 divisions across the country.

Recall that on Wednesday, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, approved the appointment of General Officers Commanding for newly established Nigerian Army divisions, marking a significant expansion of the military's command structure to enhance operations nationwide.

In the statement, Governor Alia characterized the decision as a "timely intervention" that underscores President Tinubu's unwavering commitment to reinforcing Nigeria's security architecture and addressing the nation's security challenges.

The establishment of the Makurdi Division, which will oversee Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi states, is expected to substantially improve military operations in the region, according to the governor.

Alia noted that the Makurdi Division will enhance military operations by providing improved command and control, facilitating faster responses to security threats, and strengthening the protection of lives and property across the North Central States.

The governor expressed optimism that the new military formation will complement his administration's efforts to curb criminal activities and improve security in the state, reinforcing ongoing endeavors to combat criminality and restore lasting peace to affected areas.

He stated that the division will reinforce his administration's efforts to protect farming communities and restore lasting peace to areas of the state that have endured security challenges.

Alia also commended President Tinubu for approving the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel into the Nigerian Army, as well as investing in military equipment, troop welfare, and operational readiness, measures that reflect the President's determination to build a well-equipped and highly motivated Armed Forces.

These measures, according to the governor, demonstrate the President's resolve to establish an Armed Forces capable of safeguarding Nigeria's sovereignty and ensuring the security of all citizens.

Finally, Governor Alia assured that his administration will continue to collaborate with the Federal Government and security agencies to achieve lasting peace, security, and sustainable development in Benue State.
