Enekwechi finishes 11th in World Indoor Champs

Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi delivered a modest performance in the men’s shot put at the World Indoor Championships in Poland on Sunday, finishing 11th with a best throw of 20.04m in a field of 17 athletes, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Competing as the country’s sole representative, Enekwechi’s effort fell short of the top contenders, although his continued presence on the global stage remains significant for Nigeria’s visibility at the championship.

It was a challenging outing compared to his previous appearance at the championships in China, where he placed fifth in the final while also representing Nigeria alone.

Nigeria’s participation at the biennial event has been hampered in recent years, with logistical issues affecting team size.

The World Indoor Championships, which serve as the global showpiece for indoor track and field, have drawn about 500 athletes from over 130 member federations competing across 27 events in the three-day meeting in Poland.

Athletes are also competing for prize money, with winners earning $40,000, while silver and bronze medallists receive $20,000 and $10,000 respectively.

In the men’s shot put final, Tom Walsh successfully defended his title in dramatic fashion to claim a fourth gold medal and a record seventh overall medal in the competition. The 34-year-old New Zealander sealed his victory with a season’s best of 21.82m, extending his remarkable record in the event. Geist settled for silver, while Roger Steen claimed bronze with a final-round effort of 21.49m.

Nigeria has recorded 12 medals in the history of the championships, comprising two gold, seven silver and three bronze, but Enekwechi’s result means the country’s wait for an addition to that tally continues.
