Emergency responders prevent gasoline truck blast in Kwara

A major disaster was narrowly averted in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Saturday, thanks to the swift intervention of firefighters who prevented a petrol tanker from exploding after it developed a mechanical fault, with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit on board.

The incident occurred at 9:40 a.m. at Madi Junction along the Oko-Olowo Expressway, where the tanker, which was in transit, experienced a mechanical fault, according to the Kwara State Fire Service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle.

The situation took a turn for the worse when the tank detached from the truck as the driver attempted to repair the faulty component, resulting in a leakage of the highly flammable petroleum product, Hassan Adekunle explained.

As the driver tried to fix the problem, the tank became disconnected from the vehicle, causing petroleum to leak out and posing a significant fire hazard, Hassan said, describing the precarious situation.

Firefighters quickly secured the area and stood by throughout the operation, ensuring that all safety measures were strictly adhered to, while the leaking fuel was carefully transferred into another tanker.

The emergency response team provided continuous fire protection during the transfer process, preventing any possible ignition or escalation of the incident, according to Hassan Adekunle.

The operation was successfully completed without any fire outbreak, injuries, or loss of life, a testament to the effectiveness of the firefighters' response.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, praised the firefighters for their professionalism and prompt response, which prevented a potential disaster from unfolding.

Alabi Muhammed also urged tanker operators and motorists to ensure that their vehicles are properly maintained and to alert emergency responders immediately in the event of petroleum-related incidents, emphasizing the importance of prompt reporting in safeguarding lives, property, and the environment.
