Elite athletes to vie for six-figure prize at Lagos' 2026 World Table Tennis event

The 2026 WTT Contender Lagos, set to take place from May 19 to 24, will bring together top table tennis nations, including Japan, Korea Republic, Germany, and France, at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

This prestigious event is part of the 10 WTT Contender Series tournaments scheduled for 2026 and is known for its vibrant and colourful atmosphere, making it a standout on the calendar.

Beyond the powerhouse nations, the tournament will also feature top-ranked players from 17 countries, including Denmark, the USA, India, and host nation Nigeria, all competing for a share of the $100,000 prize purse over five days.

The Lagos event has become increasingly popular, attracting players with its energetic atmosphere and warm hospitality, which has become a hallmark of the tournament.

According to Adesoji Tayo, chairman of the Local Organising Committee, the tournament has established itself as a premier showcase of elite-level table tennis in Africa.

Tayo expressed his excitement about hosting the event, stating that it highlights not only elite table tennis in Africa but also Nigeria's growing influence on the global sporting stage, particularly following the centenary anniversary of table tennis in London.

The 2026 edition of the tournament will see the return of former champions, alongside a stellar line-up of competitors, further solidifying the growing prestige of the Lagos event.

The WTT Contender Series plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between grassroots development and elite competitions, such as WTT Champions, providing a pathway for players to earn ITTF World Ranking points and opportunities for emerging talent to shine.

The Lagos tournament will feature a range of events, including men's and women's singles with a 32-player main draw per gender, men's and women's doubles with 16 pairs per gender, and mixed doubles with eight pairs.
