Electricity supply resumed in Lagos following a brief disruption to the national grid by TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has successfully restored bulk power supply to the Lagos complex via the Benin-Egbin 330kV transmission line, following a national grid disturbance that triggered a widespread power outage on Thursday.

This disturbance occurred at approximately 8:19 a.m. when voltage instability spread rapidly across the Lagos corridor, resulting in the loss of some generating stations and subsequent transmission line outages.

A statement from TCN, signed by General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, explained that the national grid experienced voltage instability at 8:19 am, which led to the loss of generating stations, transmission line outages, and the interruption of electricity supply to Lagos and surrounding areas.

In response to the incident, the National Control Centre promptly instructed several generating stations to reduce output and stabilize the system by arresting the frequency rise.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, swiftly convened an emergency meeting with the heads of TCN and the Nigerian Independent System Operator to coordinate urgent restoration efforts.

The Benin-Egbin 330kV transmission line, which tripped during the incident, has now been fully restored and is transmitting bulk electricity, while efforts to restore the Benin-Omotoso 330kV transmission line are still ongoing.

A team of TCN engineers from the Benin and Omotoso sub-regions are working to rectify the remaining faults on the 330kV Benin-Omotoso transmission line to ensure the full restoration of bulk power supply to the Lagos complex as quickly as possible.

TCN expressed regret over the disruption, acknowledging the inconvenience and discomfort caused to residents, businesses, and electricity customers in the affected areas.

The company assured the public that all relevant agencies are working to restore normalcy, with the Ministry of Power and other agencies doing everything possible to rectify the line and enable normal bulk power transmission.

TCN's goal is to stabilize and strengthen the national grid, aiming to minimize the recurrence of such incidents.

The company urged consumers to exercise patience as restoration work continues on the Benin-Omotoso transmission line, with updates to be provided as progress is made.
