EKEDP cites sabotage and ongoing grid improvements as causes of power disruptions in Festac area

The persistent power outages in Festac Town, Amuwo Odofin, and surrounding areas have been blamed on transmission upgrades and the recurring issue of vandalism targeting underground distribution cables, according to Eko Electricity Distribution Plc.

A statement issued on Wednesday by Abiola Aloba, the General Manager of Corporate Communications, explained that the recent power supply challenges in the region are mainly due to ongoing improvement works at the national transmission level, which have been exacerbated by vandalism.

Eko Electricity Distribution Plc noted that the primary cause of the recent supply disruptions in Festac Town is the upgrades and improvement activities being carried out at the national transmission level, with the situation further worsened by the frequent vandalism of underground distribution cables, an issue that is most prevalent in the Festac area within the company's network.

The company has completed and commissioned the new Festac 3 feeder, which originates from the Ojo Transmission Station, providing an alternative power source for Festac Town, although energisation is pending the completion of load balancing arrangements and approvals from the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Partial restoration of electricity supply has been achieved on the Festac 1 33kV feeder, following the isolation of a faulty underground cable, with efforts to locate and repair faults ongoing on a daily basis.

Eko Electricity Distribution Plc has invested hundreds of millions of naira to strengthen the electricity network in Festac, as part of its efforts to address the power supply challenges in the area.
