Egbunike tips Ogazi to break additional records

Innocent Egbunike, a former Nigerian quarter-miler, has given his seal of approval to Samuel Ogazi, predicting the young athlete will go on to achieve even greater things after shattering his long-standing national 400m record, according to PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Ogazi's impressive time of 44.02s eclipsed Egbunike's mark of 44.17s, which had remained unchallenged since it was set in Zurich in August 1987, thereby ending a 38-year reign.

Egbunike took to Facebook to congratulate the new record holder and reflect on the lasting impact of Nigerian athletics, acknowledging that his own accomplishments were built upon the foundations laid by past greats, while also paving the way for future generations.

In a heartfelt message, Egbunike wrote, "Congratulations Ogazi," as he joined the sports community in Nigeria and beyond in congratulating Samuel Ogazi on his remarkable achievement.

Egbunike expressed his gratitude to God for allowing him to draw inspiration from athletes who came before him, including Dele Udo and Sunday Uti, who previously held the national record, as well as his teammates Moses Ugbusien and Rotimi Peters.

He also acknowledged the contributions of those who followed in his footsteps, such as the late Sunday Bada and Clement Chukwu, and appreciated the fact that his record had stood for 39 years, noting that records are meant to be broken.

Egbunike offered his sincere congratulations to Ogazi on his incredible feat, saying, "Well done, young man," and advised him to remain humble in the face of his newfound status as Nigeria's fastest 400m runner.

Innocent Egbunike remains one of Nigeria's most decorated quarter-milers, having won the country's first track medal at the World Championships with silver in the 400m in Rome in 1987.

Additionally, he secured bronze as part of Nigeria's 4x400m relay team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, cementing his legacy as a pioneering athlete in Nigerian sports.
