EFCC Foils Attempt by Contractor to Install Bogus Power Transmission Lines, Olukoyede Reveals

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, under the leadership of Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede, took decisive action in 2024 to prevent a contractor hired by the Ministry of Power from proceeding with a project that utilized counterfeit and subpar transmission lines.

This revelation was made by Olukoyede during a courtesy visit from Olusegun Adesayo, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency, at the commission's Abuja headquarters.

According to Dele Oyewale, the EFCC's spokesman, the commission's investigation revealed that the contractor had imported fake transmission lines, posing a significant threat to the nation's safety.

Olukoyede stated that the EFCC had written to the Ministry of Power in 2024 to blacklist the contractor after confirming the importation of fake and substandard power transmission lines for a contract.

The intervention by the EFCC prevented a potential catastrophe and possible loss of lives and property, as acknowledged by Olukoyede, who emphasized the significance of the commission's timely action.

The EFCC's intervention, as noted by Olukoyede, averted a disaster that could have resulted in significant loss of life and property, thereby saving the nation from a potential calamity.

Olukoyede expressed the EFCC's willingness to collaborate with the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency to enhance electricity supply and ensure compliance with regulations in the power sector.

He emphasized that cooperation between the two entities could lead to improved electricity supply in Nigeria, as all stakeholders would be required to adhere to the industry's rules and laws, which fall within the EFCC's mandate to combat economic sabotage and financial crimes.

Olukoyede urged the agency to focus on procurement and contract fraud, areas where the EFCC has expertise that could support the agency's operations.

During the visit, Adesayo explained that the purpose was to strengthen collaboration with the EFCC to ensure safety standards in the power industry and reinforce the agency's commitment to transparency and accountability.

Adesayo highlighted that the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency is responsible for enforcing technical standards and regulations in the electricity sector to guarantee safety, reliability, and quality of electrical cables nationwide.

He sought the EFCC's assistance in various areas, including intelligence sharing, procurement monitoring, investigation of substandard electrical materials, contract abuses, and regulatory issues, as well as public sensitization and capacity building.

Adesayo emphasized the importance of effective regulation and anti-corruption enforcement, seeking a coordinated effort to protect public infrastructure and natural resources, and also requested guidance on strengthening the agency's internal control mechanisms.

He assured the EFCC of ongoing internal reforms within the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency to enhance probity and align with the Federal Government's anti-corruption agenda.

The disclosure comes at a time when concerns are growing over the use of substandard materials and procurement irregularities in Nigeria's power sector, which are believed to contribute to poor electricity supply and infrastructure failures.
