Education crucial for personal, societal growth – Edo monarch

The Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, Michael Sado, on Saturday said that education is necessary for personal and societal growth.

He stated this at the 7th Annual Qur’an Recitation Competition held at FUTAC Schools, Imiagwuese, Okpella, in honour of his predecessor, the late Andrew Dirisu.

The event attracted students, Islamic scholars, parents, and community leaders from across Okpella and neighbouring communities, highlighting its growing importance as a platform for religious learning and youth development in Etsako East Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event, the monarch commended the organisers for sustaining the annual competition, describing it as a worthy tribute to the late traditional ruler, whose legacy of piety and commitment to education continues to resonate in the community.

He urged young participants to remain committed to both Islamic and formal education, noting that knowledge remains essential for personal growth and societal progress.

“This competition reflects our values and the need to preserve the legacy of those who came before us.

Participants competed in different categories of Qur’anic recitation, showcasing discipline and mastery of the Holy Qur’an. Winners were presented with prizes and recognition for their performance.

Religious leaders and education stakeholders at the event also called for increased support for Islamic education and the welfare of young scholars in the area.

The competition further underscored the culture of peaceful coexistence in Okpella, with residents from different backgrounds in attendance.

The annual event is held in memory of the late Okuokpellagbe, Alhaji Dirisu, and has continued to serve as a unifying platform for the community.
