Dumping of waste continues unabated along Agege train tracks, clean-up efforts notwithstanding

Despite the Nigerian Railway Corporation's repeated efforts to clear the area, the illegal dumping of refuse persists along sections of the railway corridor in Agege, Lagos. The area remains plagued by heaps of refuse, including plastic waste, food remnants, and other household waste, which line parts of the railway tracks.

The situation has sparked concerns among residents regarding public health, environmental pollution, and the potential danger it poses to railway operations, prompting worries about the overall well-being of the community.

Oyeniran Prince, a local government official stationed near the railway corridor, noted that indiscriminate dumping has continued in the area for nearly two years, despite regular clearance by railway workers.

Prince emphasized that the Nigerian Railway Corporation, rather than the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, is responsible for maintaining the railway corridor, highlighting the need for clarity on jurisdictional responsibilities.

According to Prince, the railway workers regularly clear the tracks and pack the refuse into bags, especially where it blocks the rail lines, but people persist in dumping waste in the area, often burning it and returning to dump more refuse after the area has been cleared.

A large waste container is located nearby, but many residents opt to dump refuse directly on the railway corridor instead of using it, contributing to the ongoing problem of waste management in the area.

Prince stated that the railway workers clean the area almost every morning, but the dumping continues, posing a significant challenge to maintaining a clean and safe environment.

However, another resident, Joshua Osagie, offered a more optimistic view, suggesting that the situation has improved compared to what it was previously, with authorities intensifying efforts to discourage indiscriminate dumping.

Osagie noted that the authorities have been clearing the refuse regularly, especially the large heap in the area, and have warned people not to dump waste there again, resulting in a reduction in the amount of refuse being dumped.

According to Osagie, the area was previously in a worse state, but the increased monitoring and intervention by authorities, including LAWMA officials, have helped to mitigate the problem.

Adewale Akinyemi, another resident, emphasized that residents also have a responsibility to stop dumping refuse along the railway corridor, as it not only makes the area look dirty but also poses a health risk due to the smell and the presence of flies.

Akinyemi urged residents to change their habits and stop dumping refuse in the area, while also calling on the authorities to enforce the law and prevent further dumping.

Commuter Grace Oladipo observed that the situation around the Agege Pen Cinema area has improved compared to what it used to be, with the heaps of refuse no longer as large as they once were.

However, Oladipo noted that the problem has not been completely solved and advocated for the government to continue monitoring the area and punishing anyone caught dumping refuse on the railway tracks to ensure the area remains clean.

Callistus Unyimadu, the spokesperson for the NRC, stated that the corporation regularly clears refuse from the railway corridor but attributed the recurring dumping to passersby who take advantage of the area, especially at night.

Unyimadu said that the NRC clears the waste whenever it accumulates, but the problem persists, and the management is exploring a lasting solution, including involving security personnel to apprehend those responsible for dumping the refuse.
