Dozens of corpses discovered as British undertaker awaits prison sentence

A British funeral director, Robert Bush, faced the possibility of imprisonment on Monday due to a scandal involving uncremated bodies and families being given the wrong ashes, prompting demands for stricter regulation of the industry.

An ex-employee of Bush's funeral parlour described the scene as reminiscent of a horror movie, according to prosecutor Chris Paxton, who presented this testimony at the start of a five-day sentencing hearing.

During a search of Bush's premises, police discovered 31 bodies in a cold storage area, including a stillborn baby that had been stored for nearly two years, despite the fact that they should have been cremated months earlier.

In addition to the bodies, the police also found over 100 sets of ashes, with the majority of the bodies being stored uncovered and in varying states of decomposition, as described by Paxton at Hull Crown Court in northeast England.

The prosecutor further elaborated on the conditions, stating that the bodies were stored on racks on both sides of the room, highlighting the alarming state of the facility.

Robert Bush, 48, had previously pleaded guilty to 67 offences committed over a period of 12 years, which affected hundreds of victims, demonstrating the extensive nature of the scandal.

Jasmine Beverley, whose son Sunny was stillborn in May 2022, recalled that Bush appeared to be a lovely and respectful person, which made the discovery of the truth even more shocking.

Beverley expressed her distress upon learning that her son's remains were found in a brown envelope on the floor, nearly two years after the funeral, despite her belief that he had been cremated.

She described the experience as distressing, and she, along with her husband and several other families, are now advocating for changes to the regulation of funeral parlours.

Prosecutor Chris Paxton noted that Bush, who operated Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, had gained the trust of bereaved families but ultimately mistreated them on a massive scale.

The investigation into Bush's business began in March 2024, after police received a tip regarding concerns for the deceased at the funeral home.

The ongoing sentencing hearing is expected to hear statements from over 100 victims, with Bush having admitted to numerous charges, including preventing lawful and decent burial, theft, and fraud.

Four of the fraud charges against Bush involved falsely presenting ashes to women as the remains of their unborn children, further highlighting the severity of the scandal.
