Don’t seek shelter under telecom masts during storms, NSCDC warns Kano residents

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kano State Command, on Friday flagged off a statewide public awareness campaign to educate residents on the safety of telecommunication masts during the rainy season and the need to protect critical telecommunications infrastructure.

Speaking at the flag-off, the NSCDC State Commandant, Mohammed Agalama, warned members of the public against tampering with telecommunication masts, underground cables, power installations or any component of telecommunications facilities, stressing that such acts constitute economic sabotage and endanger public safety.

The state commandant noted that heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds associated with the rainy season could pose risks around telecommunication installations.

He therefore urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid taking shelter under telecommunication masts during storms and promptly report any damaged or suspicious installations to the nearest NSCDC office or other relevant authorities.

“Telecommunication infrastructure remains a critical national asset that supports communication, security operations, emergency response, banking services, and economic activities,” Agalama said.

He stressed that protecting the facilities is a collective responsibility.

He further directed all 44 divisional officers across Kano State to immediately take the awareness campaign to the grassroots by engaging traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations, youth groups, schools, religious institutions and other stakeholders on the importance of safeguarding telecommunication infrastructure and observing safety precautions during adverse weather conditions.

He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to protecting all Critical National Assets and Infrastructure, warning that anyone found vandalising or interfering with telecommunication facilities would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The NSCDC boss appealed to members of the public to cooperate with the corps by providing credible and timely information to help prevent vandalism and ensure the continuous provision of telecommunication services across Kano State.

The Command’s Department of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection, headed by DCC Victor Bala Muhd, will coordinate the implementation of the campaign across the state.
