Dispatch rider dies in Lagos multiple crash

A dispatch rider was killed on Saturday in a multiple road traffic accident involving two trucks at Ijesha, inward Mile 2, Lagos.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency disclosed this in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu.

LASEMA said its Eagle Response Team “promptly responded” to the accident involving a FAW truck with registration number T-30364LA, an Iveco truck with registration number KSF 958 XV and a dispatch rider.

The agency said, “Preliminary investigation by the Eagle Response Team revealed that the accident was caused by reckless driving and wrongful road use by both truck drivers.

“The FAW truck was said to have hit the Iveco truck while both vehicles were dragging for right of way, and in the process the Iveco truck struck the dispatch rider from behind.

“Sadly, the dispatch rider lost his life in the incident. Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Okota Division evacuated the remains of the deceased and deposited them at the morgue for identification and further necessary procedures.”

The two trucks were subsequently moved from the main carriageway and parked at a designated layby.

According to LASEMA, “This action was taken to prevent further obstruction and to guarantee free flow of vehicular movement along the corridor.”

The agency said the Eagle Response Team and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force were present at the scene, adding that “the operation was successfully concluded and the road has since been declared safe for motorists and other road users.”

Oke-Osanyintolu commiserated with the family of the deceased and prayed for the repose of his soul.

He also reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to the safety of all road users, particularly vulnerable groups.

LASEMA said it “once again urges all commercial drivers to desist from reckless driving, wrongful overtaking and dragging for lanes.”

The agency added, “Road safety remains a collective responsibility and strict adherence to traffic regulations is essential to preventing avoidable loss of lives on Lagos roads.”

LASEMA further stated that it remained committed to “prompt emergency response and inter-agency collaboration” to safeguard lives and property across Lagos State.
