DHQ restricts night sailing, issues rainy season safety advisory

The Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, has issued a safety advisory to mariners, boat operators and residents of riverine communities, warning of increased risks of boat accidents due to rising water levels during the ongoing rainy season.

The advisory was issued on Tuesday by the Maritime Component of OPWS on the directive of the Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara.

In a statement signed by the Acting Media Information Officer, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, the Maritime Component Commander, Lt. Cdr. Dusse Zakari, said the rise in water levels across inland waterways had led to stronger currents and turbulence capable of endangering water transportation and other riverine activities.

“The ongoing rainy season has resulted in a significant rise in water levels. This increase in water volume is often accompanied by strong currents and turbulence, which may pose serious risks to water transportation and other riverine activities.

“Consequently, there is an increased likelihood of boat mishaps that could result in the loss of lives and property if adequate safety measures are not observed,” Zakari said.

The Maritime Component directed all passengers and mariners to wear life jackets at all times while on board and ordered boat operators to ensure that at least one life buoy is available on every boat.

It also prohibited overloading of boats beyond approved carrying capacities and advised operators to carry essential safety and emergency equipment, including functional torchlights, spare spark plugs and tarpaulins.

It added that “mariners should desist from polluting waterways with non-biodegradable materials and other waste products.

“All maritime unions are to enforce the prohibition of night sailing. Marine operations are strictly restricted to the hours between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily for security reasons.”

It also mandated boat operators to register with their respective unions and carry valid means of identification while operating on the waterways.

Riverine communities were encouraged to promptly report suspicious movements and criminal activities to security agencies.

“He also called on all mariners’ unions to ensure strict enforcement and compliance with these safety advisories among their members,” the statement added.

The Maritime Component reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring security across waterways within its area of responsibility.

It urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by adhering to the safety measures and remaining vigilant.
