Demonstrators invade ADC headquarters amid ₦100m controversy

A demonstration was held on Thursday at the national secretariat of the African Democratic Congress in Abuja, where a group of protesters gathered to express their concerns.

The protesters, who were members of the Advocate for Women in Governance, were seeking clarification on allegations that the party had disbursed ₦100 million in connection with the recent Federal Capital Territory election.

Amaka Christian, the group’s convener, addressed journalists during the protest, stating that the goal was to prompt the party’s leadership to respond to claims made on national television approximately three weeks prior.

Christian explained that the protest was aimed at obtaining a straightforward answer from the party, asking if it was true that they had disbursed ₦100 million to cover costs for the just-concluded election in FCT.

The convener emphasized that the group was not making accusations, but rather seeking transparency and accountability, and simply wanted to know the truth about the allegations.

Christian added that the allegation had been made publicly, and it was essential for the ADC to either confirm or deny it, as the group’s next course of action would depend on the party’s response.

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Queen Okiyi, responded to the allegations by urging party members and the public to remain calm, describing the claim as a rumour that would be addressed by the party.

Okiyi defended the track record of Senator Ireti and cautioned against using divisive rhetoric, stating that the party prioritized the interests of women and sought to maintain unity.

Okiyi assured that the party would provide the necessary responses to the allegations, and encouraged everyone to stay united and focus on making ADC victorious in 2027.
