Delta resident confesses to faking own abduction in bid to swindle N25m from relatives

Michael James, a resident of Delta State, has revealed the motivations behind his alleged self-kidnapping plot, which aimed to extort N25m from his family members. He claimed to have orchestrated the scheme due to his inability to repay debts owed to his brother and sister.

According to James, his financial predicament led him to devise the plan, as he had already spent the money borrowed from his siblings and saw no viable means of repayment. In a video shared by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, James recounted the events leading up to his staged kidnapping.

On July 1, James was tasked with disposing of refuse, but instead of returning home, he abandoned his wheelbarrow and hid in a nearby bush, marking the beginning of his self-kidnapping scheme. He then made contact with his mother, deceiving her into believing that he had been kidnapped and that his captors were demanding a ransom of N25m.

James further manipulated his family by claiming that his abductors were physically abusing him, and he had transferred N700,000 to them, in an attempt to convince his family to pay the ransom. However, upon learning that the police and local vigilantes were working to rescue him, James became apprehensive about the situation.

As the day drew to a close and a rainstorm approached, James left his hiding place on a motorcycle and relocated to a different area, where he eventually contacted his family, falsely claiming that he had managed to escape from his captors. He recounted the events in detail, including the phone calls he made to his mother, during which he pretended to be in distress.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, Bright Edafe, responded to the reported kidnapping by utilizing digital intelligence to track James' location, ultimately uncovering the truth behind the staged abduction. Edafe explained that the command's swift response and use of digital intelligence led to the discovery of James' scheme.

Edafe noted that upon tracing James to his alleged location, the suspect emerged, claiming to have escaped from his captors, but later confessed to having staged the kidnapping himself in order to extort N25m from his family. This incident is not an isolated case, as there have been previous reports of individuals staging self-kidnappings to extort money from their families.

A similar incident was reported by PUNCH Metro on June 9, in which the Ogun State Police Command arrested eight foreign nationals who had been operating a self-kidnapping scheme in Adiyan town, with the goal of extorting money from their families abroad. The command's spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that the arrests were made following an intelligence-led operation into a reported kidnapping case.

The investigation into the Ogun State case revealed that the alleged kidnapping was, in fact, a staged abduction designed to deceive unsuspecting family members into paying a ransom, highlighting the growing trend of self-kidnapping schemes for financial gain.
