Delta now a forbidden zone for rival political groups, Oborevwori claims

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State declared on Friday that the state has effectively become off-limits to opposition parties, citing the sheer number of infrastructure projects his administration has completed in under three years.

This assertion was made during the inauguration of the 4.8-kilometre Oko–Amakom/Oko-Obiokpu/Oko-Anala Road in Oko Kingdom and a network of roads in Asaba, both located in Oshimili South Local Government Area, according to a statement.

Oborevwori noted that his electoral success in 2023, where he won in 21 out of 25 local government areas, was a testament to his appeal, and that the subsequent development projects have further solidified the state's position as a stronghold for his party.

The governor announced that the state government has awarded the contract for Phase Two of the Oko road project to Setraco Nigeria Limited at a cost of ₦16.9 billion, with the project slated for completion within 24 months.

Oborevwori expressed confidence that the contractor would complete the project ahead of schedule, highlighting the positive impact the newly commissioned Oko road would have on the lives of local farmers.

The governor stated that the improved road conditions would enable farmers to easily transport their produce to markets, thereby increasing their income and standard of living, as they would no longer have to rely on neighbouring Anambra State.

Oborevwori also inaugurated the Amaechi Agusi and adjoining roads in Asaba, highlighting the completed drainage system as a solution to the area's long-standing issues with erosion and flooding.

The governor cited several recently commissioned projects, including the Government Technical College in Omadino and new faculty buildings at the University of Delta, Agbor, and Southern Delta University, Ozoro, with more projects scheduled for commissioning in the coming weeks.

Oborevwori emphasized that his administration's focus on performance and delivery would continue, with youth and women empowerment programmes under his MORE Agenda set to be rolled out soon, demonstrating his commitment to governance and accountability.

According to the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, the Oko road was constructed with flood resilience in mind, built above the levels recorded during the 2012 flood disaster to prevent future disruptions.

The Director-General of the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, Patrick Ukah, revealed that over 70 kilometres of roads had been completed or were ongoing within the capital territory, including about 50 kilometres executed directly by his agency and more than 20 kilometres of drainage works.

Ukah also announced that the Asagba Road project in Asaba had received the governor's approval and would commence construction soon, further expanding the state's infrastructure development efforts.

The Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Council, Kelvin Ezenyili, described the commissioned roads as transformative, noting that the improved access roads would greatly benefit local communities that had long struggled with poor road conditions hindering commerce and farm produce transportation.
