Delta gov orders resignation of appointees eyeing 2027 election

The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has directed all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was disclosed in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Eze Emu, and shared on the state government’s official page on Monday.

According to the statement, the directive is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.

It noted that the resignation requirement applies to all categories of political appointees seeking nomination or intending to participate in party primaries.

The affected officials include commissioners, advisers, directors-general, executive assistants, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, and other political appointees in the state.

“The directive is pursuant to the provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement read.

It further stated that affected appointees are required to submit their resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government on or before the deadline.

“The affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to State Government not later than March 31st, 2026, and hand over to the Permanent Secretary or the most senior career officer in their Ministries, Departments and Agencies,” the statement added.

The government urged all concerned appointees to take note of the directive and ensure strict compliance.

The move comes amid increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several states taking steps to regulate the participation of serving appointees in partisan contests.
