Delta CP seeks cohesion between police, judiciary

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Theresa Diai, noting with concern that “criminals would benefit when the police and the judiciary are divided over technicalities”.

The police boss emphasised the importance of synergy between the police and the judiciary, just as he emphasised that “both institutions play critical and complementary roles in the criminal justice system”.

The courtesy visit was part of ongoing efforts by the Commissioner of Police to strengthen collaboration between the police and other organs in the administration of justice and maintenance of law and order across Delta State.

During the visit, Oyeniyi, acknowledged that “while the police may occasionally have operational shortcomings, such issues should not create unnecessary friction between both institutions, as criminals would only benefit when the police and the judiciary are divided over technicalities”.

He added, “The police fully understand and appreciate the vital role of the judiciary in upholding justice, fairness, and the rule of law, but we appealed for continued understanding, cooperation, and mutual support in the collective fight against crime and criminality.”

The Commissioner of Police appreciated the cooperation and cordial relationship existing between the Delta State Police Command and the Judiciary, stressing that the shared objective remains the reduction of crime to the barest minimum and the sustenance of peace and public safety across Delta State.

In her remarks, the Chief Judge of Delta State, Diai, appreciated the CP for the visit and expressed optimism that the approach of the police boss would strengthen the relationship between the police and the judiciary and also improve the administration of justice in the state.

The visit featured discussions on matters relating to security, prosecution, judicial processes, and continued institutional collaboration towards a safer Delta State.
