Days of unchecked freedom are over, declares Inspector General Disu

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ushered in a new era for the Nigeria Police Force, proclaiming that the days of unchecked wrongdoing are now a thing of the past, and a more transparent and effective system is being implemented. This revamped approach to policing is being introduced to restore trust and accountability within the force.

Disu extended an invitation to all police personnel to join him in his efforts to reform the force, acknowledging that he cannot accomplish this task alone and requires the collective support of his colleagues.

During his official visit to the command in Benin, Edo State, on Friday, Disu engaged in an interactive session with officers, where he outlined his vision for a more accountable and transparent police force.

The IGP announced plans to upgrade the traffic warden unit, taking into consideration the concerns and grievances expressed by officers during the interactive session.

Disu revealed that his conversations with the officers had been enlightening, and he had gained new insights into the challenges faced by the force, including the lack of recruitment into the traffic warden corps for many years.

The IGP cited a specific example, where a traffic warden officer brought to his attention the fact that no new recruits had been added to the corps in a long time, prompting him to consider upgrading the unit upon his return to Abuja.

Disu also addressed the issue of impunity, referencing a recent incident in which a police officer allegedly shot and killed a civilian who was not resisting arrest, emphasizing that such actions would no longer be tolerated.

The IGP pointed out that swift action was taken in response to the incident, with the officers involved being tried, dismissed, and set to face charges in court, demonstrating the force's commitment to ending impunity.

Disu reiterated that the era of impunity is indeed over and that a new, reformed Nigerian Police Force is being established, one that requires the collective effort and cooperation of all personnel to succeed.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, appealed to the IGP to provide support to the command in areas such as logistics, tactical operations, and personnel development.

Agbonika highlighted the command's efforts to intensify high-visibility policing, conduct aggressive bush-combing operations, and implement intelligence-driven raids, emphasizing the need for the IGP's support to sustain these initiatives.
