Daily Ridership of Lagos Bus System Reaches 42,000 Commuters Spanning 40 Different Routes, According to Authorities

The Lagos State Government has revealed that the Lagos Bus Services Limited is currently handling over 42,000 passenger movements on a daily basis, with approximately 1,000 bus trips taking place across the state every day, as part of its efforts to expand affordable public transportation options.

This figure was disclosed by the Director of Public Affairs, Bolanle Ogunlola, in a statement released on Tuesday, which was presented during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing, marking the third year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the performance of the Lagos Bus Services Limited reflects the ongoing efforts to modernise the transport system in Lagos and improve mobility across road, rail, and water systems.

A report presented at the briefing stated that the Lagos Bus Services Limited has transported a total of 60,882,000 passengers from May 2019 to February 2025, with the agency currently recording over 42,266 passengers daily, and an average of 1,000 bus trips every day.

The report also noted that the fares charged by the Lagos Bus Services Limited are relatively lower compared to those charged by informal transport operators, making it a key tool for affordable mobility in the state.

The bus network now covers all five IBILE divisions and 13 Local Government Areas, including Ibeju-Lekki, Ojo, and Ikorodu, according to Osiyemi, who stated that the Lagos Bus Services Limited maintains the widest public bus network coverage in Lagos State.

The agency operates 21 corridors and over 40 bus service routes across the state, supported by six depots and a fleet of 300 buses, as outlined in the report.

According to Osiyemi, the achievements of the Lagos Bus Services Limited reflect the commitment of the Sanwo-Olu administration towards building an integrated, safe, affordable, and efficient transportation system for Lagosians, in line with the THEMES+ Agenda.

The government remains committed to expanding infrastructure across road, rail, and water transport systems to improve connectivity, as stated by Osiyemi.

In an earlier presentation at the briefing, the Ministry of Transportation outlined its broader achievements under the administration, including the fact that over 3.5 million passengers have used the Blue Rail Line.

Operations on the Red Line Rail have been expanded with additional coaches to reduce waiting time for commuters, and ongoing works include the Blue Line Phase II project from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, as well as junction upgrades at major corridors.

Intelligent traffic systems have been deployed in several areas, including Ikeja, Lekki, Ikoyi, Surulere, Epe, Gbagada, and Victoria Island, to improve traffic flow, as stated in the report.

About two million passengers now use Lagos waterways monthly, supported by ferry expansion, safety campaigns, life jacket distribution, and the OMI-EKO electric ferry initiative, according to the report.

Osiyemi stated that the Ministry remains committed to delivering a safe, integrated, affordable, and sustainable transportation system in line with the THEMES+ Agenda, with several new projects already planned for 2026.

These planned projects include the Green and Purple Rail Line projects, the Lekki Water Taxi initiative, AI driver simulators, and expanded smart mobility systems, as mentioned by Osiyemi.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said that the reforms reflect a broader transformation of Lagos transport beyond rail and road infrastructure.

Omotoso stated that the administration’s transport initiatives are aimed at building a more connected and technology-driven mobility system across the state, and that people who believe transportation is only about the Blue and Red Line Rail projects or NURTW activities would now better understand that transportation is much broader.
