Crawford University Vice Chancellor Advises Freshers to Embrace Non-Violent Conduct and Maintain Order

Prof. Solomon Makinde, the Vice-Chancellor of Crawford University, has called on newly admitted students to reject violence and instead prioritize integrity and discipline to achieve a fulfilling academic experience, emphasizing that their decision to attend the university demonstrates confidence in its teaching and learning quality.

Makinde made this appeal during the matriculation ceremony for 917 new students, including 85 postgraduate students, for the 2025/2026 academic session, which took place on Wednesday, urging them to adhere to the institution's rules and regulations to ensure a successful academic journey.

Each new student, according to the Vice-Chancellor, represents a beacon of hope for their families, the nation, and the future, and he encouraged them to stay focused on developing themselves as problem-solvers who will make a positive impact on humanity.

Makinde described matriculation as a transformative journey, marking the formal induction of students into a community of scholars committed to discipline, excellence, and purpose, rather than merely a ceremonial exercise.

He emphasized that matriculation is a covenant between the students and the university, requiring them to uphold discipline, integrity, and excellence, and assured them that the university is dedicated to providing a sound education, moral guidance, and a conducive learning environment.

As Julius Nyerere once stated, 'Education is not a way to escape poverty; it is a way of fighting it,' Makinde noted, adding that the university's goal is to empower students not only for personal success but also for societal transformation through education.

According to Makinde, Crawford University's graduates are equipped with 21st-century skills, enhancing their relevance and employability in the contemporary global workforce, and he encouraged new students to take advantage of available opportunities to acquire skills for self-actualization and self-reliance.

The Vice-Chancellor reminded students to adhere strictly to the university's dress code, shun violence and examination malpractice, and cultivate a culture of transparency, honesty, humility, obedience, and perseverance, emphasizing the importance of exemplary conduct as future leaders.

Makinde also stressed the importance of embracing the fear of God, citing the biblical teaching that 'the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,' and urged students to embody this value in their academic and personal lives.

Crawford University, established in 2005 by the Apostolic Faith Mission under the leadership of Rev. Paul Oge Akazue, was founded with the mandate to provide quality higher education rooted in strong moral and spiritual values, and has since grown into a respected institution with multiple colleges and accredited programs.

The university's motto, 'Knowledge with Godliness,' reflects its commitment to combining academic excellence with godliness, and the new management team, which took office in October 2025, has continued to build on this legacy through improvements in academic delivery, administrative efficiency, and infrastructural development.

As a private Christian institution licensed by the National Universities Commission in April 2005, Crawford University focuses on combining academic excellence with strong moral values, offering programs across the natural and social sciences, and recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and 17th convocation in November 2025.

During the convocation, Prof. Felicia Alu Moh was appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council, marking a new phase in the university's pursuit of strengthened governance, academic excellence, and faith-based leadership, with the current leadership committed to sustaining the university's growth and transformation.
