A recent report from Forbes has pinpointed the university majors that are most likely to boost graduates' job prospects in 2026, a time when employers are scaling back their hiring efforts and artificial intelligence is transforming the labour landscape, all based on exclusive data from LinkedIn.

The report, which was accessed on Forbes' website on Sunday, reveals that graduates with degrees in social sciences and humanities are faring better in the current job market due to the transferable nature of their skills across multiple industries.

According to the report, the hiring of new college graduates remains sluggish, with a 20 per cent decline in recruitment compared to pre-pandemic levels and a 5 per cent drop compared to the previous year.

LinkedIn's analysis of the 20 most common bachelor's degree majors on its platform assessed the hiring conditions in various industries and the ability of graduates to transition into other sectors, concluding that versatility is now a significant advantage for new graduates navigating the challenging employment market.

The analysis found that while engineering and computer science graduates enjoy strong employment prospects and higher starting salaries, their specialised skills now offer limited opportunities to switch into different industries.

The report notes that graduates who majored in social sciences and humanities are proving resilient in the job market because they acquired skills that can be applied across multiple industries, whereas engineering graduates face a weak hiring market and have more specialised skills that are less versatile.

The report also found that entry-level hiring linked to graduates' fields of study declined across all 15 of the most common university majors between December 2019 and April 2026.

According to LinkedIn's analysis, the most versatile university majors in 2026, whose graduates are most likely to secure jobs outside their traditional career paths, include English, Visual & Performing Arts, and Communication & Journalism, with versatility rankings of 69%, 68%, and 67% respectively.

The top 10 most versatile majors are rounded out by Business & Marketing, Computer & Information Sciences, Social Sciences, Interdisciplinary Studies, Homeland Security & Law Enforcement, Parks, Recreation & Fitness, and Psychology, with versatility rankings ranging from 64% to 55%.

The report highlights the fields that have experienced the sharpest decline in entry-level hiring between December 2019 and April 2026, including Engineering, Computer & Information Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Studies, with hiring declines of -25%, -24%, and -24% respectively.

Other majors with significant hiring declines include Business & Marketing, Communication & Journalism, Physical Sciences, Visual & Performing Arts, Social Sciences, and Homeland Security & Law Enforcement, all with declines ranging from -23% to -22%.

The findings suggest that students choosing a university major should consider not only the potential earnings but also the ease with which the acquired skills can be applied across different industries.
