Competition Heats Up for Imo West Senatorial Position in 2027, With Three Front-Runners Emerging

Imo West, also known as Orlu senatorial district, is abuzz with intense political activity as three prominent figures, Governor Hope Uzodimma, former Governor Rochas Okorocha, and incumbent Senator Osita Izunaso, compete for the APC ticket in the run-up to the 2027 elections, with Uzodimma seemingly gaining the upper hand due to endorsements from party leaders and groups.

Imo State, like other states, has three senatorial zones, but the Imo West seat is currently the focus of attention, with the contest pitting three seasoned politicians against each other, all of whom have previously held the position and now seek to reclaim it.

As of Monday, May 4, 2026, nomination forms had been purchased in the names of Uzodimma, Okorocha, and Izunaso, setting the stage for a fierce battle.

Uzodimma, who serves as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, wields significant influence within the All Progressives Congress at all levels and leads the APC in Imo State, a position his rivals may not acknowledge, having previously represented Imo West as a senator from 2011 to 2019 before winning the governorship election.

Rochas Okorocha, a former governor of the state, controlled Imo APC from 2013 to 2018 and played a key role in forming the party by merging his All Progressives Grand Alliance faction with others, winning re-election on the APC platform.

In 2019, Okorocha was declared the APC winner of the Imo West senatorial election, polling 97,762 votes against Jones Onyereri's 63,117, although the result was marred by controversy, with the returning officer stating he was forced to announce it under duress.

Senator Osita Izunaso represented Imo West from 2007 to 2011 and returned in 2023 after prior service in the House of Representatives, with all three contenders boasting extensive networks, but only one can emerge victorious.

Uzodimma, who became governor on January 15, 2020, is due to hand over about eight months after the 2027 general elections, and analysts believe it is nearly impossible to install a placeholder senator who would resign post-tenure, triggering a fresh election via the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Sources suggest Uzodimma prefers to resign and contest directly, ensuring a loyal successor, with his Deputy Governor, Dr Chinyere Ekomaru, rumored to be his top choice due to her loyalty and lack of ambitions.

Multiple state APC sources claim that Ekomaru has been a loyal deputy to Uzodimma and believe she fits the bill to take charge of the state once Uzodimma hands over the baton, with one source stating that Ekomaru is Uzodimma's best candidate to take over from him because she is loyal and has no single political ambition after this.

Uzodimma's deep APC involvement gives him strong party insight, and leaders of the Orlu Political Consultative Assembly, a key Orlu-based group, have endorsed him as their sole candidate, with APC stakeholders from Orlu Zone, led by the state chairman, Chief Austin Onyedebelu, buying Uzodimma's 2027 senatorial form and urging him to heed Orlu's call.

The state APC also urged other aspirants to step aside, naming Uzodimma their consensus candidate, with efforts to reach Izunaso's spokesperson, David Nwaenyi, on the matter failing, but a senior lawyer and Imo politician, Chief Willie Amadi, claiming Izunaso will not contest but support Uzodimma.

Amadi recounted his conversation with Izunaso during a recent telephone chat, stating that Izunaso had informed him that he would rather support Uzodimma instead of contesting against him, with Amadi believing Izunaso because he is a man of few reliable words who thinks deeply with great discernment.

Rochas Okorocha's challenges are significant, as he lacks party control since Uzodimma's rise, and analysts cite his fallout with godfathers, making reconciliation unlikely, with the widely held belief in Imo State being that without President Bola Tinubu's direct intervention, Okorocha cannot defeat Uzodimma in primaries.

Uzodimma's strong odds of claiming the senatorial seat are evident, with an APC official dismissing his rivals' efforts as futile, stating that whoever wants to contest for the APC Orlu senatorial ticket will just be wasting their time and money, as nobody can stop Uzodimma at this point.

Another analyst described Uzodimma as a "goal-getter," stating that he always achieves his political goals and is likely to become the next Senate President, with the current principal officers of the Senate aware of his ambitions.

Recent Senate rule changes, which restrict presiding and principal roles to ranking senators with consecutive terms, excluding newcomers like governors or former senators, are seen as targeting Uzodimma, but are deemed ineffective, with the Senate rescinding controversial amendments to its Standing Orders 2026 following concerns by lawmakers that some provisions were inconsistent with the 1999 Constitution.

The reversal came days after the upper chamber amended portions of its rules, a move that had triggered controversy and sharp exchanges among senators, with Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, stating that a fresh legislative and constitutional review revealed that some provisions introduced under Order 2 Subsection 2 and Order 3 Subsection 1 could conflict with Section 52 of the Constitution.
