Coalition calls on lawmakers to abandon partisan rhetoric in lead-up to 2027 elections

The Christian Conscience, a non-denominational group, is advocating for political stakeholders to abandon divisive politics as the 2027 general elections approach, instead embracing the country's diversity as a unifying force.

This call to action was made in a statement released on Friday, following the group's monthly meeting in Lagos the previous day.

The statement, jointly signed by National Chairman Dr Yetunde Akinluyi, National Secretary Dr Kolawole Verrals, and conveyed by National Publicity Secretary Mr Tunji Oguntuase, emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among politicians.

The group is urging politicians to foster an environment of mutual respect, equal opportunities, and unity, regardless of factors such as gender, ethnicity, religion, or region.

A key message from the statement is that politicians should view the country's diversity as a source of strength, rather than a point of division, as stated in the phrase "politicians should see our diversity as a weapon of strength, not a source of division".

The Christian Conscience believes this appeal is particularly relevant now, as political parties begin to mobilize for the upcoming 2027 general elections, and is stressing the importance of unity as the nation's guiding principle.

The group warned against the dangers of politics driven by bitterness and sectional interests, instead promoting a vision of "a healthy nation united in its diversity".

In other news, the Christian Conscience has commended the efforts of security agencies, Nigerian soldiers, and intelligence operatives in securing the release of abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oriire town in Oyo State.

The group has expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the incident and is urging security agencies to apply the same effective approach to rescue other victims still being held captive across the country.

The Christian Conscience has also praised the Federal Government for demonstrating the necessary political will to secure the victims' release and is encouraging the government to sustain this commitment in its efforts to tackle insecurity.
