Centre ends literacy summer camp

Kids Resource Centre, an initiative of Smart Kids Literacy Foundation, has concluded a two-week educational programme, marking the fifth edition of its literacy summer camp.

The founder of KRC, Deborah Mogho, in a statement made available to Saturday PUNCH, said the camp was created to give children opportunities to learn, explore and develop skills outside the conventional classroom setting.

She said the programme, held from August 10 to 22 in Bonny Island, Rivers State, featured reading adventure, science and discovery, creative arts, leadership and life skills, as well as debates, games, talent development and other interactive activities.

According to her, the camp also featured a community service initiative focused on environmental cleanliness.

“As part of the leadership and life skills component, the children took part in a supervised community clean-up exercise.

n

“At KRC, we believe literacy goes beyond the ability to read and write. It also involves developing confident thinkers, effective communicators and responsible members of society. The literacy summer camp gives children the chance to read, create, ask questions, collaborate and discover new possibilities,” Mogho said.

She added that the deliberate inclusion of community service in this year’s programme was important.

“We want children to understand that they are not too young to contribute to their communities. When children participate in activities like environmental clean-up, they begin to grasp responsibility, teamwork and the role each person can play in building a better community,” she added.

The 2026 edition also provided opportunities for volunteers and facilitators to donate their time, skills and expertise to support the children’s development throughout the programme.

The centre reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to quality literacy activities and creating more opportunities for children in Bonny Island to read, learn, create and thrive.
