Can Nigerians join US, UK armies? Requirements explained

For many Nigerians, joining a foreign military may appear to offer an opportunity to build a career, gain new skills and experience life abroad.

The British Army and United States Army are among the foreign military forces that attract interest from Nigerians seeking military careers. However, eligibility rules differ significantly, and being a Nigerian citizen does not automatically qualify an applicant to enlist.

As of September 2026, the British Army’s recruitment window for Commonwealth residents is closed, while the US Army requires non-US citizens seeking to enlist to already have lawful permanent resident status in the United States.

British Army

According to the British Army’s official website, Commonwealth citizens may apply to join the Army when recruitment is open.

However, being a Commonwealth citizen does not mean Nigerians can currently submit a general Army application.

The British Army’s official nationality guidance states that the application window for Commonwealth residents is currently closed, except for applicants seeking to become musicians. The Army has not announced a date for the reopening of general Commonwealth recruitment.

The Army says it received an unprecedented volume of applications in 2024 and is currently not inviting further applications from Commonwealth nationals, while the situation remains under review.

Its official nationality guidance states:

“The application window for Commonwealth residents is CURRENTLY CLOSED, except for Musician applicants.”

Therefore, Nigerians should be wary of anyone claiming to be able to secure a regular British Army recruitment slot while the official application window remains closed.

When Commonwealth recruitment is open, applicants must meet the Army’s nationality, medical, fitness, qualification and other eligibility requirements. Specific requirements vary according to the role being applied for.

The British Army’s regular soldier application process involves submitting an application, attending an Army Briefing and, if invited to continue, attending a two-day Assessment Centre in the UK. The assessment includes a full medical examination, physical and mental tests, team exercises and a career discussion.

The British Army says it pays for applicants’ travel to and from the Assessment Centre.

Successful candidates undergo final checks before receiving an offer of employment and an enlistment date.

The Army currently lists more than 100 roles, covering areas including combat, engineering, logistics, medicine, intelligence, communications, information technology, human resources, finance and music.

Recruitment applications should be made through official Army channels. Applicants should be particularly cautious about agents demanding money in exchange for supposedly guaranteed recruitment places.

US Army

According to the US Army and USA.gov, the situation is different for Nigerians seeking to join the United States Army.

A Nigerian living in Nigeria cannot simply apply at a US embassy and enlist in the US Army. The Army’s current requirements state that an enlisted applicant must be either a US citizen or a permanent resident with a valid Green Card.

USA.gov similarly states that non-US citizens seeking to join the US military must have a US Permanent Resident Card, commonly known as a Green Card. It also states that a person cannot join the military to enter the US or obtain a visa.

This means a Nigerian who is not a US citizen would first need to obtain lawful permanent residence in the United States through an immigration route for which they qualify.

Once they have a Green Card and meet the other requirements, they can contact an Army recruiter and begin the enlistment process.

According to the current US Army recruitment website, enlisted applicants must be between 17 and 42 years old, medically and physically fit, have a high school diploma or equivalent and earn the required minimum score on the Army’s entrance test.

The process includes speaking with a recruiter, taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, completing the required medical examination, selecting a career field, signing an enlistment contract and taking the Oath of Enlistment before beginning Basic Training.

However, a Green Card does not give a permanent resident access to every Army occupation. Some positions have additional citizenship or security-clearance requirements.

Military service can also provide an expedited route to US citizenship for eligible permanent residents. The US Army says that, for eligible Green Card holders, the residency requirement for naturalisation can be reduced to as little as one day, with the naturalisation process able to begin as soon as the first day of Basic Training. However, naturalisation is not automatic and applicants must still complete the applicable process and meet its requirements.

Those seeking to become commissioned officers face additional requirements. The Army states that officer applicants must have a bachelor’s degree by the time they are commissioned, while citizenship requirements also apply to commissioning.

What Nigerians should know

The two routes are fundamentally different.

For the British Army, Nigeria’s Commonwealth status can make a Nigerian eligible to apply when Commonwealth recruitment is open. But as of September 2026, the general Commonwealth application window is closed, apart from musician applicants, and the Army has not announced when applications will reopen.

For the US Army, Nigerian nationality alone does not create an enlistment route. A Nigerian who is not a US citizen must first have lawful permanent resident status and a valid Green Card before being considered for enlistment.

Anyone considering either option should rely on the official recruitment websites rather than social-media recruiters, agents or individuals promising guaranteed enlistment.
