BREAKING: Medical Staff Stage Demonstration in Abuja Against Contentious Healthcare Legislation

Health workers from the Joint Health Sector Unions and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations have gathered at the Unity Fountain in Abuja to protest a proposed health sector reform bill currently under consideration by the National Assembly.

The demonstrators are vehemently opposed to the legislation, citing concerns that it would drastically alter the regulatory framework of the country's health sector, with far-reaching consequences for healthcare professionals.

According to the protesters, the bill aims to consolidate control of all medical professions under the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, a move they claim would erode the authority of existing professional bodies and disrupt the sector's balance.

The health workers argue that each medical profession already has its own regulatory council, and that the proposed law would unfairly relegate non-physician healthcare professionals to a subordinate position, creating an uneven playing field.

The protesters further contend that the bill is designed to establish a hierarchical structure, with medical doctors holding superior status over other healthcare professionals, effectively rendering them "second-class" citizens within the sector.

The demonstrators plan to march to the National Assembly complex to present their grievances to lawmakers and push for a reconsideration of the proposed legislation, which they believe would have detrimental effects on the healthcare system.

The unions had previously announced plans to stage a nationwide protest in Abuja against the proposed Health Sector Executive Bills 2026, which is currently before the National Assembly, with the goal of mobilizing healthcare professionals from across the country to converge on the National Assembly Complex.

An official communication from the unions, obtained on Thursday morning, confirmed that the protest would bring together healthcare professionals from all over the country, with participants gathering at the Unity Fountain in Maitama before proceeding to the National Assembly Complex.
