Barco makes switch to Chelsea as part of Blues' overhaul after stint with Strasbourg

Valentin Barco has officially become Chelsea's seventh signing of the transfer window, completing a move from Strasbourg, the club's sister team, on a lengthy seven-year contract, on Sunday.

This transfer marks the second time a player has made the switch from the Ligue 1 outfit to the Blues during this window, following in the footsteps of Emmanuel Emegha, and represents the 13th deal between the two clubs since the beginning of the last season, highlighting their shared ownership group.

At just 22 years old, Barco has already enjoyed a notable career, featuring in the Argentina squad that progressed to the World Cup final, where he was involved in a heated exchange with Jude Bellingham over his enthusiastic celebrations in front of the England team during the semi-final stage.

Barco boasts versatility, being capable of playing in both the left-back position and midfield, and has prior experience in the Premier League, having had a brief stint with Brighton three seasons ago.

Initially, he joined Strasbourg on loan from Brighton in 2024, before making the move permanent a year later, having played a significant role in the team's qualification for the Conference League.

Barco's arrival at Chelsea is the latest development in a busy transfer period for the club, as they seek to restructure under the guidance of their new manager, Xabi Alonso.
