Barcelona stays atop La Liga with 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano thanks to Araujo's decisive header

Barcelona's grip on the top spot in La Liga tightened with a narrow 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, courtesy of Ronald Araujo's decisive header, which extended their lead over Real Madrid to seven points.

The winning goal came after 24 minutes, when Araujo nodded home a corner from Joao Cancelo, securing the three points at Camp Nou, with goalkeeper Joan Garcia's outstanding display also playing a crucial role in the win.

Hansi Flick's side was caught off guard in the opening stages, but Garcia made a remarkable save to deny Carlos Martin from close range, setting the tone for his impressive performance.

Garcia, who was recently called up to the Spanish national team by Luis de la Fuente, made several exceptional saves to keep Rayo at bay, particularly in the second half when the Madrid side dominated.

Raphinha, on the other hand, was guilty of squandering numerous scoring opportunities, including a chance where he scuffed the ball wide after dispossessing Pathe Ciss and charging towards the goal.

A few minutes later, Ciss appeared to bring down Lamine Yamal in the area, but the referee ignored the Barcelona player's appeals for a penalty.

Yamal created another fine chance for Raphinha with a superb cross using the outside of his boot, but the Brazilian's mis-hit effort was tipped over by Augusto Batalla.

Araujo, who has not featured much since taking a mental health break late last year, came on as a substitute in Barca's 7-2 Champions League rout of Newcastle in midweek and was rewarded with a start against Rayo, which proved to be a winning decision.

With Eric Garcia rested due to a muscle overload, Flick started the Uruguayan at right-back, and Araujo repaid his trust with the winning goal from Joao Cancelo's corner midway through the first half.

After the interval, the Catalans came close to a second goal, but Yamal dragged a low effort across the face of goal, allowing Rayo to take control and generate dangerous chances in search of an equalizer.

Joan Garcia denied Alvaro Garcia and then produced a spectacular save to push away Unai Lopez's header, as Rayo pushed for a leveler.

Pacha Espino should have pulled the visitors level, but after beating Barca's high defensive line and staying onside, he curled the ball over the bar, wasting a golden opportunity.

Garcia pushed away a Jorge de Frutos drive before six minutes of stoppage time were added, and Barca clung on to secure the win.
