Awoniyi joins Onyeka at Coventry

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is set to join compatriot Frank Onyeka at Coventry City, with the newly-promoted Premier League side on the verge of announcing his signing from Nottingham Forest, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Coventry City and Nottingham Forest have reached a club-to-club agreement for the permanent transfer of the forward, with a medical now underway ahead of his official unveiling.

Awoniyi, who won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup with Nigeria, will become the second Super Eagles player signed by manager Frank Lampard since Coventry’s promotion to the Premier League, following the arrival of Onyeka from Brentford at the end of last season.

Onyeka completed his own permanent move to the CBS Arena after an impressive loan spell in which he featured in 14 Championship matches, contributing one goal and one assist, with his performances playing a key role in Coventry’s promotion-winning campaign that ended a 25-year absence from the Premier League.

During his four-year spell at Nottingham Forest, Awoniyi registered 23 goals and six assists in 103 appearances across all competitions, 21 of those goals coming in the Premier League, where he made 90 appearances.

The 29-year-old had entered the final year of his contract at the City Ground, which he joined from Union Berlin in 2022. Before his move to Germany, he had spells with Mainz 05, Royal Excel Mouscron, Gent, NEC Nijmegen and FSV Frankfurt.

With Onyeka already established at the club, Awoniyi is expected to bring valuable top-flight experience as Coventry prepare to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League this season.
