Authorities reassure public over roadblocks in Nigeria's capital

On Thursday, security agencies shed light on the rationale behind the substantial presence of security personnel and barricades in various areas of Abuja's city centre, stating that these measures are standard procedure aimed at upholding law and order amidst a surge in protests within the Federal Capital Territory.

Residents and visitors were reassured by the agencies that the intensified security measures are routine, despite the barricades causing congestion and delays for thousands of motorists, civil servants, and workers commuting to and from offices in the Federal Capital Territory.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, responded to concerns over the security measures during a joint media briefing, stating that there is no security threat that warrants panic, and the current situation is under control.

Iniedu explained that a joint operation is underway, and the security agencies have intensified deployments to ensure public safety due to an observed increase in protests within the city centre, with the primary goal of maintaining law and order.

The police spokesman emphasized that the heightened security presence is crucial, particularly because Abuja is Nigeria's capital city and is home to diplomatic missions, government institutions, and foreign investors, requiring extra measures to ensure confidence and safety.

Iniedu further stated that the Nigeria Police Force has expanded its security strategy to include "intelligence-led community collaborative policing," recognizing that intelligence gathering alone is insufficient to tackle emerging security threats, and therefore, collaboration with local communities is essential.

This approach, according to Iniedu, involves creating collaborative processes with communities, as the police have come to realize that intelligence alone is not enough to address security challenges.

Kingsley Amako of the National Coordination Office of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit also spoke, stating that security agencies are continually strengthening intelligence gathering and financial surveillance to combat terrorism financing.

Amako noted that while some security operations cannot be publicly disclosed, agencies are working together to counter evolving threats, and he urged the media to engage with security institutions whenever clarification is required, as they continue to evolve and adapt to new tactics and strategies.
