Authorities in Kwara detain teenager, 15, over alleged murder of relative

A 15-year-old boy, Gobri Yusuf, has been apprehended by the Kwara State Police Command for allegedly murdering his aunt, who had taken him in and raised him, in Ilorin, the state capital.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, revealed this information on Friday during a press briefing held at the Force headquarters in Ilorin.

A distress report about a woman, identified as Akanbi A., found in a pool of blood at her residence, prompted the police to make the arrest, according to Ojo.

On January 14, 2026, at approximately 2030hrs, the police received the distress report, and they immediately responded, commencing a discreet investigation, the commissioner explained.

Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect, who lived with the deceased, allegedly hid behind a door and attacked the victim while she was bathing, using various household items.

The police recovered several items believed to have been used in the attack, including a frying pan, a weighing scale, a kitchen turning stick, and kitchen knives, as disclosed by Ojo.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and stated that his actions were driven by resentment towards the deceased, who had previously raised him.

The suspect also revealed that he had attempted to poison the deceased in the past, but those attempts were unsuccessful, according to the commissioner.

After allegedly committing the crime, the suspect changed his clothes and left the residence, pretending to run an errand, and later contacted the deceased's husband, who then discovered her lifeless body.

The commissioner confirmed that the suspect, Gobri Yusuf, remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
