Authorities in Adamawa seize cars lacking license plates

The Adamawa State Police Command has commenced the impoundment of vehicles operating without registration number plates and those with concealed or altered plate numbers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said a special task force had been constituted by the Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, to enforce the directive.

“The Commissioner of Police, Adamawa State Command, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, has directed the immediate enforcement of the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at curbing the use of vehicles operating without registration number plates and those with concealed, altered, defaced or otherwise obscured registration details,” the statement read.

According to the statement, the commissioner has set up a special task force comprising personnel drawn from relevant departments and formations of the command.

“In compliance with the directive, the Commissioner of Police has constituted a special task force comprising personnel drawn from relevant departments and formations of the command, headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Abubakar Haruna, to monitor compliance and carry out enforcement operations across the state,” it stated.

The command expressed concern over the increasing use of unregistered and improperly identified vehicles, describing the trend as a threat to public safety and security.

“The command notes with concern the increasing use of unregistered and improperly identified vehicles, a situation that poses serious security risks and undermines efforts geared towards crime prevention, intelligence gathering and public safety.

“Criminal elements often exploit such vehicles to perpetrate crimes and evade detection,” the statement added.

It further stated that the task force had been mandated to identify, stop and take appropriate legal action against any vehicle found operating without approved registration number plates or with concealed, altered, covered or tampered registration numbers.

“Such vehicles may be impounded and subjected to necessary legal procedures in accordance with extant laws,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police urged vehicle owners and other road users in the state to comply fully with vehicle registration requirements and all traffic regulations.

He warned that the enforcement exercise would be carried out without fear or favour and that no individual or group would be exempt from compliance.
