Authorities detain nine individuals in connection with Jigawa unrest

The Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended nine suspects in connection with various offenses, including culpable homicide, an attack on a police facility, and violent disturbances at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area, according to SP Shi’isu Adam, the state Police Public Relations Officer.

In a statement made available on Monday in Dutse, the state capital, Adam confirmed that the arrests are part of the command's efforts to maintain law and order across the state, which has been a sustained endeavor.

The unrest at Gujungu Market, which occurred on July 26, 2026, began with a fight, Adam explained, and the situation escalated into violence after a misunderstanding between a soldier and 25-year-old Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim of Miga Local Government Area.

According to Adam, the soldier allegedly stabbed Biniya with a knife, resulting in fatal injuries, and the chaos that followed led to attacks on security personnel and property, with some hoodlums taking advantage of the situation to attack a police station.

The police spokesperson stated that the hoodlums discharged bows and arrows at security personnel and set two thatched shops ablaze within the market, and through intelligence-led operations, police operatives arrested two suspects believed to have actively participated in the attack.

The suspects, identified as 22-year-old Muhammed Muhammed of Gagarawa Local Government Area and Faridu Mohammed, are currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices, Adam added.

In a related incident, six more suspects were arrested on August 2, 2026, for allegedly attacking two vigilante members with sticks and cutlasses, resulting in the death of one vigilante member and injuries to the second victim, who is currently receiving treatment.

The command also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the unrest, Adam said, and the six suspects, including Isiyaku Abdulkarim, 55, Yahaya Habu, 31, Ibrahim Abubakar, 30, Audu Mamman Janare, 30, Ya’u Duga, 65, and Mamman Musa, 20, are from Taura, Gagarawa, Kaugama, and Jahun local government areas.

In another case, the police received a report of a fatal stabbing in Dabigel Village, Ringim Local Government Area, on Monday, August 3, 2026, at about 10:30hrs, which occurred after a quarrel between two young men degenerated into violence.

According to Adam, preliminary findings showed that one of the 20-year-old youths allegedly stabbed the other with a sharp metal object in the chest, resulting in serious injuries, and the victim was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment.

Acting swiftly, police operatives arrested 20-year-old Saminu Ibrahim of Gidan Gona Village, Ringim Local Government Area, in connection with the incident, and the case is currently under investigation, Adam stated.

The suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse, for discreet investigation, and upon completion of the investigation, the suspect will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction to face the full weight of the law, according to the PPRO.

A stakeholders’ engagement involving Miyetti Allah, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, youth representatives, and other relevant stakeholders is currently ongoing, aimed at addressing the root causes of the Gujungu Market incident and preventing a recurrence.

The Commissioner of Police commended the professionalism and swift response of officers and other security stakeholders in containing the disturbances, Adam said, and assured residents that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property.

The CP also assured residents that the command will continue to deal decisively with anyone found engaging in criminal activities, and the Jigawa State Police Command urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue supporting the police by providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing investigations and enhance public safety.
