Authorities detain female suspect in connection with death of toddler in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has taken a woman, Sadiat Yunusa, into custody for allegedly taking the life of a three-year-old girl, Ummaiyat Y., in the Kaiama Local Government Area, with the motive reportedly being jealousy stemming from a long-standing domestic dispute.

Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi revealed this information on Friday in Ilorin, where he also discussed the command's recent successes in addressing violent crimes throughout the state.

According to Commissioner Adekimi, an investigation into the matter began on July 25 after the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters received a report of the three-year-old's suspicious death.

Adekimi explained that the investigation started on July 25, 2026, following a report about the tragic killing of three-year-old Ummaiyat Y.

Preliminary findings indicated that the victim's mother had left her in the care of a family member while she went to the Kaiama Central Market, during which time the suspect, Sadiat Yunusa, allegedly lured the child to a nearby farm settlement and caused her death by strangulation.

The suspect's arrest was made possible by prompt investigative efforts, and during questioning, she voluntarily admitted to committing the crime, according to the Commissioner.

Commissioner Adekimi stated that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation, saying she was motivated by resentment and jealousy related to her husband's relationship with his second wife.

The suspect allegedly told investigators that her actions were driven by jealousy and resentment stemming from a prolonged domestic dispute, claiming her husband had neglected her and their three children in favor of his second wife.

The police commissioner confirmed that the suspect, Sadiat Yunusa, has been charged in court, and he assured residents that the command will continue to thoroughly investigate and prosecute criminal cases throughout the state.
