Authorities detain 89 individuals for license plate infractions in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has taken 89 drivers into custody for disregarding the directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police regarding the crackdown on vehicles lacking registration number plates or with covered number plates, as such infractions pose a significant threat to both local and national security.

In a separate development, the command apprehended two suspects, Abdulsalam Adam and Israel Salako, who were allegedly involved in armed robbery, and recovered a stolen vehicle and two motorcycles during distinct operations aimed at eliminating criminal elements from the state.

According to DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, the enforcement exercise was conducted in response to a nationwide directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, targeting vehicles operating without registration plates or with covered, altered, or obscured number plates.

Babaseyi stated that during the operations, 89 vehicles and their drivers were apprehended for violating the directive, and appropriate administrative and legal actions have been taken against the offenders in accordance with extant laws and established procedures, including prosecution where applicable.

The exercise is part of a strategic preventive policing initiative designed to enhance vehicle traceability, bolster intelligence gathering, facilitate prompt investigations, and deny criminal elements the anonymity they often exploit to commit crimes.

The command intends to sustain the exercise across Ogun State, and all violators will be dealt with in accordance with the law, as emphasized by Babaseyi.

Operatives from the Ogere Division, in collaboration with the Ogun State So-Safe Corps, local vigilantes, and residents, thwarted an armed robbery operation at Akuro Phase I, Ogere Remo, on Thursday, where robbers invaded a residence and stole two motorcycles, mobile phones, cash, and other valuables before attempting to escape.

The swift deployment of security operatives forced the suspects to abandon the two motorcycles and flee into a nearby bush, and subsequent coordinated efforts led to the arrest of one suspect, Abdulsalam Adam, who is currently assisting investigators with useful information.

A knife, one expended cartridge, and one broken padlock were recovered as exhibits from the scene, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, for further investigation.

On July 2, 2026, operatives from the Ajuwon Division responded promptly to a distress call reporting an armed robbery incident at Baale Akinosi Area, Ajuwon, where hoodlums invaded a residence and stole mobile phones, jewellery, power banks, a laptop computer, a Toyota Camry, and other valuables.

The division's Anti-Crime Team immediately mobilised and launched a coordinated operation, and upon sighting the police, the fleeing hoodlums abandoned the stolen vehicle during a hot pursuit and escaped, resulting in the arrest of one suspect, Israel Salako, who is currently assisting investigators.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover other stolen property, and the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers and men involved in the successful operations for their professionalism, vigilance, prompt response, and dedication to duty.

The CP reiterated that the command remains committed to proactive, intelligence-led policing through sustained visibility patrols, strategic stop-and-search operations, prompt response to distress calls, community partnership, and intelligence gathering aimed at preventing crime before it occurs.

Ojajuni urged all motorists to comply fully with vehicle registration requirements and advised members of the public to remain security-conscious by boarding commercial vehicles only at designated motor parks and recognised loading points.

He further cautioned against patronising unbranded vehicles or private vehicles illegally operating as commercial transport and encouraged residents, whenever practicable, to share vehicle details and travel information with trusted relatives or friends before embarking on journeys.

The CP also appealed to residents to continue supporting the police by providing timely and credible information capable of preventing crime and facilitating prompt operational response, assuring the people of Ogun State that the command would continue to sustain robust preventive policing strategies and maintain relentless pressure on criminal elements to ensure the safety and security of all residents.
