Authorities apprehend trio, seize large stash of 5,676 banned substances in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested three suspected drug dealers and recovered 5,676 pieces of assorted suspected illicit drugs during intelligence-led raids across the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Lawan Adam, that the suspects were identified as Umar Rabiu, also known as Sarka, 22, of Unguwar Gamji; Auwalu Muhammad, 25, of Gusau Quarters; and Umar Akilu, 25, of Kuka Village.

The PPRO noted that the operations formed part of the command’s ongoing crackdown on the sale, distribution and abuse of illicit substances.

“The operations, which form part of the Command’s ongoing crackdown on the sale, distribution and abuse of illicit substances, led to the recovery of 5,676 pieces of assorted suspected illicit drugs from the suspects,” the statement read.

He noted that the recovered exhibits included 3,833 tablets of Exol, 204 tablets of tramadol, 919 tablets of diazepam, 114 capsules of pregabalin, 101 tubes of rubber solution, 30 Lara capsules, codeine syrup, two litres of ‘Suck and Die,’ as well as one block and 475 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The police also recovered N93,626, which it said was reasonably believed to be proceeds of the illicit drug trade.

Speaking on the development, the Commissioner of Police, Haruna Alaba Yahaya, commended the operatives for their professionalism, vigilance, and unwavering commitment to disrupting drug trafficking.

“The abuse and illicit trafficking of narcotic substances remain major drivers of violent crimes and social vices, particularly among the youth,” he said.

The commissioner warned those involved in the sale, distribution or consumption of prohibited drugs to desist or face the full weight of the law.

“The command will continue to intensify intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling drug networks and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice,” he added.

The statement added that the suspects had been arraigned in court.

PUNCH Metro reported in July that the command arrested 105 suspected drug traffickers during simultaneous raids across the state.

The command noted that the operation led to the recovery of more than 5,000 illicit drugs and intoxicating substances, including cannabis and other hard drugs, as part of its sustained crackdown on drug trafficking and substance abuse.
