ASUU-UNIZIK ends strike as members receive full August salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Branch, has suspended its strike action following the complete payment of its members’ August 2026 salaries.

The suspension takes effect immediately from Friday, September 11, 2026, in line with a resolution reached by the branch congress after it commenced the strike on September 7 over the non-payment of the complete August salary.

In a statement signed and made available to journalists by the ASUU Branch Chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, on Friday, the union directed all members to resume their academic and administrative responsibilities.

According to the union, the duties include teaching and lectures, supervision, marking, committee meetings, submission of results and other official responsibilities.

The statement read, “Pursuant to our Congress resolution and notice of September 7, 2026, where members of ASUU-UNIZIK resolved to withdraw their services pending the complete payment of August 2026 salary.

“The Branch Executive is pleased to inform all members that the complete August 2026 salary has now been paid to all members.

n

“Consequently, and in line with the resolution, the Branch hereby directs the immediate suspension of the strike action with effect from today, Friday, September 11, 2026.

“All members are therefore directed to resume all academic and administrative duties, including teaching, lectures, supervision, marking, committee meetings, submission of results, etc.

“We commend all comrades for your resoluteness, unity, and discipline during this period. Our solidarity and collective action yielded positive result.

“Let us remain vigilant and continue to monitor developments. Official updates will be communicated via our union platforms.

“Once again, thank you for standing firm. Solidarity Forever!”

The Branch Executive commended members for their resoluteness, unity and discipline throughout the period, noting that their collective action had yielded a positive result.

The union, however, urged members to remain vigilant and continue to monitor developments, assuring that official updates would be communicated through its platforms.

The latest development follows the September 7, 2026, Congress resolution activating the ASUU National Executive Council’s “No Pay, No Work” position over the delayed payment of the complete August salary.

With the outstanding salary now fully paid, ASUU-UNIZIK has consequently directed members to return to their respective academic and administrative duties.
