Army investing in drones to enhance operations – COAS

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has said the Nigerian Army is deliberately investing in drone technology and other modern systems to improve battlefield awareness and operational effectiveness.

He made the remarks on Thursday during the closing ceremony of the Combat Arms Training (CAT) Week 2026 held at the Jaji Military Cantonment in Kaduna State.

The event brought together serving and retired senior military officers for lectures, demonstrations, and strategic discussions aimed at strengthening counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shaibu said modern military success depends heavily on technology and intelligence-led operations.

“We are deliberately investing in technology-driven capabilities, including drones, to improve situational awareness and operational success in the field,” he said.

He explained that the Nigerian Army is expanding its use of drones, surveillance systems, and combat aviation to improve precision in operations and enhance troop effectiveness.

The Army Chief stressed that while technology is important, the competence and adaptability of personnel remain critical to success on the battlefield.“

“Success in today’s operations is not just about having equipment, but about having well-trained, resilient, and adaptive soldiers who can use these tools effectively,” Shaibu added.

The training week featured live-fire demonstrations involving armoured vehicles, infantry units, and combat support systems, alongside simulated battlefield exercises designed to reflect real operational conditions.

Senior officers also participated in lectures addressing emerging threats, counterterrorism strategies, and evolving warfare dynamics.

In his remarks, the Commander of the Infantry Corps, Major General Godwin Mutkut, commended the Army Chief, describing his reforms as impactful on troop welfare and operational efficiency.

The programme concluded with a symbolic pulling-out ceremony in honour of retired infantry generals, marking the end of the 2026 Combat Arms Training Week.

The Nigerian Army said the exercise reflects its continued commitment to professional development, modernisation, and sustained efforts in tackling insecurity across the country.
